1,4-Butanediol is a colourless viscous liquid-like liquid that reacts with strong oxidising agents. It is an important basic organic chemical raw material, mainly used in the production of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyurethane, gamma-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran.
It is used as a reagent for chromatographic analysis and also in organic synthesis
1,4-Butanediol is widely used. More than half of it is used in the USA and Western Europe for the production of tetrahydrofuran, followed by ¦Ã-butyrolactone and polybutylene terephthalate, which are rapidly developing engineering plastics; 1,4-butanediol is used as a chain extender and as a raw material for polyurethane elastomers and flexible polyurethane foams; the esters produced from 1,4-butanediol are good plasticizers for cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylates and polyesters. 1,4-Butanediol has good hygroscopic flexibility and is used as a softening and absorbent agent for gelatine and as a treatment agent for cellophane and other unused papers. It is also used in the preparation of N-methylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpyrrolidone and other pyrrolidone derivatives, vitamin B6, pesticides, herbicides and solvents for a variety of processes, plasticizers, lubricants, humidifiers, softeners, adhesives and brightening agents for the electroplating industry.
Reagent for chemical analysis, used as a fixative for gas chromatography. Used as a solvent, non-toxic antifreeze, food emulsifier, hygroscopic agent, for organic synthesis. Pharmaceutical and food industries. |
